Johnson’s Pasture Is Saved From Extinction
By Tisza Major-Posner | June 15, 2007
Hi All,
A wonderful thing happened on Tuesday June 12th, a very wonderful thing. Johnson’s pasture a 180 Acre parcel of open land was saved from extinction by development with the last minute agreement to the 11.5 Million dollar purchase price being offered. (For more information about the particulars of the transaction please check out the story in the Claremont Courier.)
Now as a REALTOR® you might wonder why I am celebrating the prevention of the development of this area. After all, there were plans proposed to add 150 brand new homes on the site. Homes that would no doubt have listed for well above the $1,000,000 mark each. Homes that I would have at some point had the opportunity to help people buy or sell.
But some things are worth much more than money. Some things are worth much more than success and some things are much more important than a commission check.
Now I don’t want you to think that I am against new development. I am well aware that here in Claremont we don’t get a whole lot of new development. Mainly because we don’t have a whole lot of arid space. For the most part what we have is what we have.
So it is usually a cause for celebration when we do get new developments, (which are actually redevelopments) like those that are going in at the Village Walk in the Claremont Village expansion, over by the Old School House/Claremont Inn , as this will give more people a chance to experience what a wonderful community Claremont is by living here.
But, I always say “Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should”. I also think that not every tree should grow just to become timber or paper. Not every flower should be cut and not every piece of land should have a building on it.
I am pleased and proud to be part of a community that seems to have its priorities in order. Bravo to the members of the city that voted by an overwhelming margin (70%) to help make this purchase a reality. Bravo to the people that worked so hard to bring this dream to a reality. And most of all… Bravo to the partners that owned Johnson’s Pasture. They understood the difference between that which is valuable and that which is priceless.
Take care all, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Tisza, nice article. In my area, due to State budget constraints, they are selling off sections of State land to Cities, school districts and developers. People are really up in arms, myself included. There is just too much development!

Hi Gary,
I think there should be a happy medium. New development can be a good thing, but not if it is at the expense of the very thing that makes our communities wonderful to live in.
Thanks for stopping by & take care,
Tisza
