Eating My Way Through The Claremont Village

    By Tisza Major-Posner | April 16, 2007

    Hi All,

Let me start by saying I love food! I don’t mean like, I mean adore with the passion of a thousand suns. I like everything about it, I like eating, I like cooking, actually I like everything that gets done in a kitchen except cleaning up. Food is one of the many reasons why I like living here in Claremont.

Sure the colleges like Scripps, Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna and Pomona are wonderful, the wholesome, “Mayberry” feel is appealing, and the views of Mount Baldy can be spectacular, but, for me, it’s all about the food!

One of my favorite places to grab a bite is in The Village. Harvard Square (206 West Bonita, (909) 626-7763) is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner. With a sheltered outdoor patio Harvard Square Cafe Patiodining area or interior seating you can be comfortable there in shorts and a t-shirt or dressed to the nines. Serving continental cusine, they have a menu that is sure to have something for everyone. I highly recommend their “Summer Salad” or the Cabrese (I sure hope I spelled that right :-). The ribeye steak is also a great lunch, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable.

After your meal there, take a stroll over to Yale Acenue where you will find Burt and Rocky’s Ice Cream Parlour. Burt & Rocky’s Ice Cream Homemade ice cream, fresh waffle cones, and carmel apples all nestled inside a candy store straight out of an Andy Hardy film.

Burt and Rocky’s is kiddie corner from the Starbucks in the Village and just up the street from Rhino Records, Rhinoa really terrific record store that sells everything from cd’s to vinyl and caters to the eclectic. The have new and used items, tend to be very fair on the pricing both on items they sell and on items they buy (you get more if you choose in-store credit for your trade-ins), and they sell some really unique bottled soft drinks. That’s how I can justify placing them in my Claremont food posting.

I found a great link that lists most, but by no means all, of the restaurants in or near Claremont. I haven’t tried them all, yet, but will post about the ones I have and will let you know what I thought. Just so you know, on the list they show Chili’s in two locations, but the one on Claremont Center Drive is closed (Claremont Toyota, where I got my wonderful Prius, bought the land to expand their car lot).

If you know of a wonderful place in or near Claremont, California that you think folks to should know about, please share.

    Take care all,

    Tisza

      Hi Vali,

Claremont is delish! When you are in the neighborhood, stop by and I will take you to some of my favorite haunts. I started by talking about the food, wait till I get to the other shopping and diversions. Thanks for the comment, I agree, Drew is making things look terrific. Thanks for stopping by!

Take care, help lots of people and have a great day!

      Hi Tisza,

I want to take my husband for cocktails at Casa 425. He wants to have Mexican food for dinner afterwards. Can you recommend a restaurant near the village that serves authentice Mexican food?

      Hi Sonia,

Thanks for stopping by! We have many wonderful restaurants within the confines of the village but don’t truly have a Mexican restaurant there… yet. However we do have a great Spanish restaurant Viva Madrid http://www.vivamadrid.com/. I know that Spanish and Mexican cuisine are as alike as chalk and cheese but these folks do have great tapas.

Personally, for really tasty Mexican fare I head to a little hole in the wall called Pubelita on Benson Avenue at Arrow Route in Upland. It is just a hop, skip and jump away (5 minutes from the village by car) and while it is short on atmosphere it is pretty long on flavor and easy on the pocketbook as well.

Another similarly dissimilar option would be Inka Trails on Foothill at Towne. Again, well outside of the village and not Mexican, Peruvian actually but truly awesome food, atmosphere and service. I did a review of them here a while back so you can take a look.

Hope this helps and inspires someone to think about bringing some great Mexican food to the village sometime soon.

Take care, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

      Tisza
