    Driving On The “Mother Road”…

    By Tisza Major-Posner | April 18, 2007

museum4_jpg_w180h135.jpg66ca.gifI love road trips! Part of the reason I chose to call this site Route 66 Living is because some of the best trips I have taken have been along that road. I feel very fortunate to now have this historic Route running right through Claremont, my adopted, and my hubby’s actual home town.

Route 66 Living gives me the chance to start to share some of my favorite meanderings. My husband Mel and I have traveled many a highway and byway in the six years we have been together.

We have explored abandoned train stops, found wonderful antique shops to poke through and fascinating old cemeteries to visit. I will share more of those trips in future posts.

Today, to inaugurate the Southern California Day Trips categories, I thought I would tell you about a particularly special trip we took on the “Mother Road” to the Mother Road. The Route 66 Mother Road Museum that is!

Located in Barstow, California, 80 miles from Claremont, this privately owned museum charges no admission and rely’s solely on donations and sales from their gift shop.

Housed in the Historic Harvey House Casa Del Desireto, the building alone is worth the trip. Within its walls you will find cars, motorcycles, signs and photos all of which are either straight off of the Mother Road herself, or evoke the era when travel along this special route was in its heyday.

Around the corner there is also a super antique mall, with what seems like miles of aisles to explore and enjoy.

If you want a wonderful day trip, well worth the gas, consider the Route 66 Mother Road Museum, 681 N. First Avenue, Barstow, CA 92311 (760) 255-1890. The museum is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 4 PM. And be sure to tell Bill, one of the proprietors, that you heard about them on Route66Living.com!
